Tariflox Tablet

Generic Name(s): Ofloxacin

Why it's used

Tariflox Tablet is used to treat certain cases of pneumonia, skin infections, lung infections, sexually transmitted infections in reproductive organs and infections in the bladder and kidneys. This medicine is also used to treat swelling of the prostate gland caused by prostatitis. This medicine works by destroying bacterial growth thus helps in preventing the bacterial infection.
When not to use
Tariflox will not work against syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection.

Tariflox is a prescription medicine that belongs to a class of medicines called Fluoroquinolone Antibacterial. How to use

Read the medicine guide provided by your pharmacist, your doctor, or the medicine company. If you have any questions related to Tariflox, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Use Tariflox Tablet as per the instructions provided by your doctor.
Tariflox is used with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine.

Typical Dosage

The typical dose of Tariflox for adults is 200-400 mg every 12 hours (typically not more than 800 mg in one day). This medicine is generally used for a period of 10 days for bronchitis, 10 days for pneumonia, 10-14 days for infection of the female reproductive organs, and 6 weeks for swelling of the prostate glands. Tariflox is commonly used at the same time every day. This medicine is not known to be addictive or habit-forming.
This medicine should be used on an as-needed basis. Tariflox should be used as directed by the doctor even if you feel well, or even if you think that there is no need for you to use your medicine.

Talk to Your Doctor

Discuss with your doctor if you develop new symptoms. If you have any kidney disease, biologic compound (creatinine) clearance less than or equal to 50 mL/min, then the dose should be adjusted to half of the recommended dose. If you have issues with the health of your liver, the dose should not be exceeded more than 400 mg per day.

Use in Children

The safety and effectiveness of using Tariflox Tablet in children has not been established. Safety and effectiveness of this medicine in children have not been established. Tariflox is known to cause joint diseases called as arthropathy in children.

Limit Alcohol

Limit drinking alcohol with Tariflox.

Lab Tests

Your doctor may request that specific lab tests be performed before you start using Tariflox Tablet. Your doctor may ask you to undergo Antibiotic Susceptibility test. This test is required to determine the specific bacterial infection. Your doctor may request Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) | Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) | Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody Absorption (FTA-ABS) | Treponema Pallidum Microhemagglutination Assay (TP-MHA) test. To confirm the infection, serologic test for syphilis is needed before using this medicine in the treatment of gonorrhea.
Medicines may be recommended for uses other than those listed in the medicine guide. You should not use Tariflox Tablet for conditions or symptoms for which it was not prescribed. Do not give Tariflox Tablet to other people, even if they have the same conditions or symptoms that you have. The use of this medicine without the advice of a doctor may cause harm.

Storage

Follow storage instructions on the product package if available. Store Tariflox Tablet at 15-30°C (59-86°F), away from excess moisture, and away from light. Store this medicine away from children and pets.

How to take Tariflox

Your dose and how often you take Tariflox will depend on the following factors:

Dosage for worsening of long-term inflammation of the lungs

Special Instructions

Tablet
It should be consumed completely with adequate liquid before or during meal times.

Missed Dose

A missed dose should be taken as early as you remember it. However, if the time for the next dose is almost there, then the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule should be continued. Avoid taking a repeated dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

What to do if you overdose on Tariflox?
If you have taken more than the recommended dose of Tariflox get medical advice immediately. The toxic effect can be reduced by cleaning out the contents of the stomach (gastric lavage), intake of sodium sulfate and adsorbents. Antacids are recommended for the protection of the mucous membrane layer of the stomach. Removal of Tariflox may be increased by excessive urine formation (forced diuresis). A small amount of Tariflox may be removed from the body by removing waste products in the blood (hemodialysis). There is no specific antidote exists and if it exists it is recommended to give during the first 30 minutes.
Symptoms of an overdose of Tariflox
If you use too much of this medicine, it could lead to dangerous levels of the medicine in your body. In such cases, symptoms of an overdose may include:

Precautions while using Tariflox

Before you use Tariflox, tell your doctor of your medical and health history including the following:
  • central nervous system problems
  • heart failure
  • heart transplant
  • high blood glucose
  • history of joint problems
  • kidney problems
  • kidney transplant
  • liver problems
  • low blood glucose
  • low potassium levels in the blood
  • lung transplant
  • nerve problems
  • palpitations
  • patients taking antiarrhythmic drugs (quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol)
  • seizures
  • slow heart rate
  • swollen and painful joints (rheumatoid arthritis)
  • tendon problems
Patients with tendon problems, kidney problems, liver problems, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney, lung or heart transplant are at an increased risk of inflammation in the thick cord (tendon) that attaches bone to muscle (tendinitis) and tendon rupture.
Before you use Tariflox Tablet, discuss with your doctor if you are allergic to it or its ingredients. Your doctor may prescribe an alternative medicine and update your medical records to record this information.
The use of this medicine may change blood glucose. Using antidiabetic medicines and Tariflox together either increases or decreases the blood sugar level.

Seizures

Tariflox Tablet can make you feel sleepy. Be careful when using any machinery, driving a vehicle, or doing any other activity that needs you to be fully alert. The consumption of alcohol with Tariflox Tablet can worsen the sleepiness. Tariflox Tablet may cause rarely seizures in some people. If you perform any activities where a loss of consciousness may cause harm to you (or others), you should discuss with your doctor.

Use in Pregnancy

The use of Tariflox is known to be not safe for use in pregnant women. If you are planning to become pregnant or are currently pregnant, you should discuss with your doctor the potential impact of this medicine on the baby before you start to using it. There are not enough and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Animal studies have shown damage to the joint cartilage and hence, either Tariflox should not be used in pregnancy or should only be used if the possible benefit justifies the possible harm to the child.

Use while Breastfeeding

The use of Tariflox Tablet is not safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding a baby, discuss with your doctor if you should either discontinue breastfeeding or stop using this medicine while breastfeeding. This medicine may pass into breast milk which may cause serious side effects to infants including arthropathy. This medicine should be used only after considering the importance of the medicine to the mother or breastfeeding should be discontinued during the period of the treatment of the mother.

Use while Conceiving

It is not known if this medicine is safe for use in women who are conceiving. Consult with your doctor before you use Tariflox. It is unknown whether this medicine will harm the unborn child.

Alcohol

Limit drinking alcohol with Tariflox. Drinking alcohol may cause dizziness.

Increased Risks

This medicine may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. If this happens, use a sunscreen and cover your skin when you are outdoors. Limit your time in the sun.

Side-effects in Older Patients

Tariflox Tablet may cause increased incidence of side-effects in older patients. Elderly patients may see an increased risk of tendon disorders, separation of a tendon from its tissue (tendon rupture), tendinitis, palpitations, low potassium level in blood, and abnormal heart rhythm.

The following severe side-effects may also occur when using Tariflox Tablet:
  • Central nervous system effects
    Symptoms: lightheadedness, seizures, hallucination, feeling restless, tremors, feeling anxious or nervous, confusion, depression, insomnia, nightmares, fearful feeling and thoughts (paranoia) suicidal thoughts or acts
  • Serious allergic reactions (possibly death)
    Symptoms: hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, throat tightness, abnormal voice changes (hoarseness), rapid heartbeat, fainting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, skin rash dark urine
    This medicine should be discontinued.
  • Intestine infection (pseudomembranous colitis) (possibly death)
    Symptoms: diarrhea, bloody stools, stomach cramps fever
    Call your healthcare provider right away if you get watery diarrhea, diarrhea that does not go away, or bloody stools
  • Changes in sensation and possible nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) (inflammation of the colon due to bacteria Clostridium difficile (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea) which can be fatal)
    Symptoms: pain, burning, tingling, numbness weakness
    Talk with your doctor right away if you get any of the given symptoms.
  • Serious heart rhythm changes (permanent nerve damage which can be fatal)
    Symptoms: abnormal heartbeat fainting
    Tell your doctor right away if you have an abnormal heartbeat, or if you faint.
  • Low blood sugar (possibly death)
    Follow your doctor instructions for how often to check your blood sugar level. If you have diabetes and get low blood sugar while taking Tariflox, stop taking Tariflox right away and call your doctor immediately.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) (possibly death)
    Symptoms: severe sunburn, blisters swelling
    If you get any of the given symptoms while taking Tariflox, call your doctor right away. When you have to be in sunlight, use sunscreen, wear a hat and clothes that cover your skin.

Warnings

Bacterial Infection in the Colon

Patients with a bacterial infection in the colon are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may experience worsening of the bacterial infection on using this medicine. Patients should discontinue this medicine and should be treated with proper fluids, minerals management, antibiotic treatment and protein supplementation as clinically indicated.

Undergoing Quinolones Drug Therapy

Patients taking quinolones are at increased risk when using this medicine. These patients are at an increased risk of central nervous system effects, fatal allergic reactions along with seizures, low blood pressure, tingling, hives, and symptoms of nerve injury (neuropathy). Such patients should discontinue this medicine on the appearance of symptoms of neuropathy and at the first appearance of a skin rash or any other sign of allergy. Treatment of serious allergic reaction include antihistamines, corticosteroids, pressor amines, epinephrine drug therapy along with oxygen, intravenous fluids, and airway management, as recommended by the doctor.

History of Tendon Disorders

Patients with a history of tendon disorders such as swollen and painful joints (rheumatoid arthritis) are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. The patient should discontinue this medicine on an increase in pain, swelling, inflammation or rupture of a tendon. Patients should rest at the first sign of tendinitis or tendon rupture and should contact the doctor for changing their medicine.

Kidney Failure

Patients with kidney failure are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. Performing Difficult Physical Activity

Lung Transplantation

Kidney Transplantation

Patients with kidney transplant are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. Patients should rest at the first sign of tendinitis or tendon rupture and contact the doctor for changing their medicine.

Patients taking corticosteroid drugs are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. This medicine should be discontinued on an increase in swelling, pain, inflammation or rupture of a tendon. Rest is advised to the patients at the first sign of tendinitis or tendon rupture and contact the doctor for changing their medicine.

Patients Over 60 Years

Elderly patients are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. This medicine should be discontinued on an increase in swelling, pain, inflammation or rupture of a tendon. Rest is advised to the patients at the first sign of tendinitis or tendon rupture and contact the doctor for changing their medicine.

Gonorrhea with Symptoms of Syphilis

Patients with this condition are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Tariflox has not been shown to be effective in the treatment of bacterial infection spread by sexual contact (syphilis). Patients using Tariflox for gonorrhea should have a blood test for syphilis. After three months of treatment of gonorrhea, patients should again undergo for a blood test for syphilis. If the blood test is positive, then treatment with suitable medicine should be continued.

Central Nervous System (CNS) Disorder

Patients with central nervous system disorder such as the blockage in the blood vessels of the brain and epilepsy or other risk factors such as certain drug therapy and kidney dysfunction are at an increased risk when using this medicine. These patients are more prone to seizures on using this medicine. Such patients should use this medicine cautiously.

Abnormal Liver Function

Patients with abnormal liver function are at an increased risk when using this medicine. These patients are at an increased risk of liver damage and inflammation of the liver which may lead to liver failure when using this medicine. Such patients are advised to stop taking this medicine and contact their doctor on symptoms of liver disease such as loss of desire to eat, jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain and itching.

Use in Women

Women are at an increased risk when using this medicine. These patients are more sensitive to the medicine-associated with heart conditions such as palpitations. Such patients should use this medicine cautiously.

Heart Disease

Patients with heart failure, heart attack and slow heart rate are at increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients are at an increased risk of palpitations when using this medicine. These patients should use this medicine cautiously.

Interactions with Tariflox

When two or more medicines are taken together, it can change how the medicines work and increase the risk of side-effects. In medical terms, this is called as a Drug Interaction.

Metal Cations

Tariflox Tablet interacts with metal cations such as iron. This medicine reduces the absorption of Tariflox. Metal cations should not be taken within a two-hour period before or after taking Tariflox.

Sucralfate

There may be an interaction of Tariflox with sucralfate, which is used to treat acid backflow from the stomach to food pipe (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and duodenal ulcers. This medicine reduces the absorption of Tariflox. Sucralfate should not be taken within a two-hour period before or after taking Tariflox.

Antacids

Tariflox Tablet may interact with antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, which are used to relieve heartburn, indigestion or an upset stomach. These medicines reduce the absorption of Tariflox. Patients should not take this medicine within a two-hour period before or after taking Tariflox.

Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with didanosine, which is used to control conditions caused by HIV/AIDS. This medicine reduces the absorption of Tariflox. Didanosine should not be taken within a two-hour period before or after taking Tariflox.

Multivitamins

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with multivitamins containing zinc, which is used to treat vitamin deficiency due to poor diet, certain illnesses, alcoholism, or during pregnancy. This medicine reduces the absorption of Tariflox. The patient should not take this medicine within a two-hour period before or after taking Tariflox.

Antigout Agents

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with probenecid, which is used to treat red, painful and swollen joints (gout) and increased uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia). Taking both medicines together decrease the elimination of Tariflox from the body. Taking both medicines together may increase the risk of convulsive seizures. It may also increase the risk of central nervous system stimulation which may lead to lightheadedness, confusion, hallucinations, depression, restlessness, nervousness, fearful feeling and thoughts (paranoia), nightmares, tremors, insomnia, and rarely suicidal thoughts or acts.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are used to treat painful and stiff joints (osteoarthritis) and swollen and painful joints (rheumatoid arthritis). Taking both medicines together may increase the risk of convulsive seizures. It may also increase the risk of central nervous system stimulation leading to lightheadedness, hallucinations, restlessness, nervousness, fearful feeling and thoughts (paranoia), depression, nightmares, tremors, confusion, insomnia, and rarely suicidal thoughts or acts.

Drugs Metabolized by Cytochrome P450 Enzymes

Tariflox Tablet interacts with drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (theophylline/methylxanthines, warfarin). Tariflox blocks the activity of cytochrome P450 enzyme which leads to an increase in the time required for the level of medicine in the body to be decreased by one-half.

Immunosuppressants

There may be an interaction of Tariflox with cyclosporine, which is used to prevent organ rejection in liver, kidney, or heart transplant. Taking both medicines together increases the level of cyclosporine in the blood.

Histamine H2 Antagonists

Tariflox Tablet may interact with cimetidine, which is used to treat ulcer and acid backflow from the stomach to food pipe (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This medicine interferes with the elimination of Tariflox. Patients should be cautious when taking both medicines together.

Urine Screening Test

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with urine tests for opiates. False positive urine screening results for opiates have been reported in patients who were receiving fluoroquinolones. Another confirmatory test should be conducted to verify the results.

Drugs Known to Prolong QT Interval

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with drugs known to cause prolonged heartbeat (Class IA and III antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants, macrolides, and antipsychotics). Using both medicines together may cause palpitations. Patients should be cautious when taking both medicines together.

Antimetabolites

Tariflox Tablet interacts with methotrexate, which is used to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases. This medicine interferes with the elimination of Tariflox. Patients should be cautious when taking both medicines together.

Diuretics

There may be an interaction of Tariflox with furosemide, which is used to treat swelling caused by excess fluid in the body's tissues and high blood pressure. This medicine interferes with the elimination of Tariflox. Patients should be cautious when taking both medicines together.

Antidiabetic Agents

Tariflox Tablet may interact with antidiabetic agents (insulin, glyburide/glibenclamide), which are used to treat high blood glucose. When taking both medicines together, the blood glucose levels may either increase or decrease. When using both medicines together, it is recommended to monitor blood glucose carefully.

The following medicines may interact when taken together and can increase your risk of harmful effects. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking these medicines together.

When should Tariflox be not used?

Allergic to Tariflox

This medicine should not be used in patients allergic to Tariflox. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:
  • fever
  • rash
  • severe skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome)
  • inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis)
  • pain in joints
  • muscle pain
  • allergic reaction to an injection of foreign protein
  • allergic inflammation of the air sacs within the lungs (allergic pneumonitis)
  • inflammation of the spaces between kidney tubules (interstitial nephritis)
  • acute kidney failure
  • inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)
  • jaundice
  • decrease in red blood cells count
  • low levels of thrombocytes
  • rare blood disorder that affects blood clotting tendency
  • decrease in the number of white blood cells
  • deficiency of granulocytes in the blood
  • deficiency of red cells, white cells, and platelets (pancytopenia)

Existing Central Nervous System Disorder

This medicine should not be used in patients with a history of epilepsy or any central nervous system disorder. Using this medicine in patients with a history of epilepsy or any central nervous system disorder increases the susceptibility of seizures or lower the seizure threshold.

Illness of the Muscle Connecting to the Bone

This medicine should not be used in patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone intake. Use of this medicine increases the risk of tendon rupture.

Defects in Enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) Activity

This medicine should not be used in patients with defects in enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) activity. Using this medicine in patients with defects in enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) activity may increase the complications that can occur after the blood transfusion.

Traveling With Medication

  • Ensure that you carry enough doses of each of your prescription medicines to last the entire trip. The best place to store your medicines is in the carry on baggage. However, while flying, if carrying liquid medicines, make sure you do not go over the limits imposed for carry-on liquids.
  • While traveling overseas, make sure that you can carry each of your prescription medicines legally to your destination country. One way to ensure this is by checking with your destination country's embassy or website.
  • Make sure that you carry each of your medicines in their original packaging, which should typically include your name and address, and the details of the prescribing doctor.
  • If your travel involves crossing time zones, and you are required to take your medicine as per a fixed schedule, make sure that you adjust for the change in time.

Expired Medication

Taking a single dose of expired Tariflox is unlikely to cause a side-effect. However, please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist, if you feel unwell or sick. An expired medicine may become ineffective in treating your prescribed conditions. To be on the safe side, it is important not to use an expired drug. You are much safer by always keeping a fresh supply of unexpired medicines.

Safe Disposal of Medication

  • If there are disposal instructions on the package, please follow the instructions.
  • If there are medicine take-back programs in your country, you should contact the respective authority to arrange for the disposal of the medicine. For example, in the USA, the Drug Enforcement Administration regularly hosts National Prescription Drug Take-Back events.
  • If there are no take-back programs, mix the medicine with dirt and place them in a sealed plastic bag. Throw the plastic bag in your household trash. Separately, remove all personal information including the prescription label from the medicine packaging and then dispose off the container.
  • If specifically indicated on the medicine package that it needs to be flushed down the toilet when no longer needed, perform the required step.
