Nosthyra Tablet is used to treat the absence or irregularity of menstrual periods. It is a prescription medicine. This medicine works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. Nosthyra is also used to treat abnormal growth of tissue in the uterus caused by endometriosis. It is also used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance. Nosthyra is also used to prevent pregnancy. This medicine works by preventing the entry of sperm into the uterus. This medicine is usually taken as a contraceptive by women who cannot use other forms of birth control such as estrogen.
When not to use
Nosthyra cannot be used to protect against HIV infection/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

How to use

Follow directions on the product label, information guide, and provided by your doctor before using Nosthyra. Eat this medicine as per your doctor's instructions.

Typical Dosage

The typical adult dose of Nosthyra is 2.5-10 mg may be given daily for 5 to 10 days in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. This medicine is commonly used for a period of 5 to 10 days for the absence of menstrual periods in a woman who had been menstruating previously, 5 to 10 days for abnormal uterine bleeding, and 2 weeks for abnormal tissue growth inside the uterus caused by endometriosis. Nosthyra is typically used at the same time every day. There are no known habit-forming tendencies with this medicine.
This medicine should be used on an as-needed basis. In certain cases, Nosthyra maybe prescribed for a period of six to nine months for the treatment of endometriosis. You should continue to use this medicine as directed by the doctor even if you feel well.

Tell your doctor if regularly about whether you should continue taking Nosthyra. If you have any kidney disease, careful observation by your doctor is required as this medicine may cause your body to accumulate some fluid. Consult with your doctor before stopping the use of Nosthyra Tablet.

How to take Nosthyra

The dose and frequency of using Nosthyra will depend on the following factors:
  • patient's health

Nosthyra Dosage

Dosage for the absence or irregularity of menstrual periods

  • Maximum: 15 mg/day

Dosage for abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding

Precautions while using Nosthyra

Before you use Nosthyra, tell your doctor of your medical and health history including the following:

The use of Nosthyra Tablet may change the level of thyroid hormone (thyroxine) in your body. Thyroxine plays a vital role in digestion, heart function, muscle function, brain development and maintenance of bones. Use of this medicine decreases the level of thyroxine in the body.
The use of this medicine may change blood glucose levels in your body. Use of this medicine leads to high levels of blood-sugar in the body.
The use of this medicine may change the levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) in your body. Use of this medicine decreases the level of high-density lipoproteins and apolipoproteins. This may lead to higher levels of bad cholesterol in your body.
The use of Nosthyra Tablet may change cholesterol levels in the body. This may increase the chances of getting heart diseases.

Use in Pregnancy

Nosthyra Tablet is not safe for use in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should discuss with your doctor the impact this medicine may have on the baby before you start to use this medicine. This medicine may harm an unborn baby when used by pregnant women. Use of Nosthyra may induce abnormal development of male sexual characteristics in the unborn female child.

Use while Breastfeeding

Nosthyra is not safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor if you should either discontinue breastfeeding or stop using this medicine while breastfeeding. This medicine may pass into breast milk.

Impact on Fertility

Dizziness

Nosthyra Tablet can make you feel sleepy. Be careful while driving, using machinery, or doing any other activity that needs you to be alert. The consumption of alcohol with Nosthyra Tablet can make you feel more sleepy.

  • Heart attack due to abnormal blood clotting ((possibly) fatal and serious long-term disabilities)

Warnings

Ovarian Cyst

Women who are using oral contraceptives are at increased risk while using this medicine. There is a risk of formation of an ovarian cyst/enlarged follicles associated with mild abdominal pain in patients using this medicine.

Breast Cancer

Women using combined oral contraceptives (example progestin with estrogen) are at risk while using this medicine. There is an increased risk of developing breast cancer in patients using this medicine. Women who have breast cancer should not use this medicine.

Genital Bleeding

Women who are using progestin-only oral contraceptives are at risk while using this medicine. An irregular menstrual pattern including genital bleeding, is common among patients using this medicine. If the prolonged absence of menstrual periods occurs, the patient should be evaluated for the possibility of pregnancy.

Heart Diseases

Patients who have diseases such as increased blood pressure, raised blood sugar level (diabetes mellitus), high blood cholesterol level, obesity, autoimmune diseases, an existing blood clot in the vein or a history of blood clots in the veins are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Patients with heart diseases should be managed appropriately while using this medicine and consult with their doctor when using Nosthyra.

Vision or Visual Abnormalities

Women who are using oral contraceptives are at an increased risk while using this medicine. There is a risk of sudden loss of vision, displacement of the eye, double vision, migraine, and other issues related to the eyes in patients using this medicine. If partial or complete loss of vision occurs in the patients, Nosthyra should be discontinued.

Cigarette Smokers

Women who smoke cigarettes are at risk when using this medicine. Smoking increases the risk of severe heart diseases in women. Women using oral contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke.

Combined Oral Contraceptives Use

Women using combined oral contraceptives (progestin with estrogen) are at risk while using this medicine. In the patients using this medicine, liver tumors may develop. The rupture of the tumor maybe possibly fatal due to bleeding.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Women who are using progestin-only oral contraceptives are at increased risk while using this medicine. In patients using this medicine, there is a risk of pregnancy that grows outside of the uterus (ectopic pregnancy). The patients who become pregnant or have lower abdominal pain should remain alert while using this medicine for the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. This medicine should not be used in patients with the history of ectopic pregnancy.

Nosthyra Tablet interacts with NSAIDs, medicines that help to reduce fever and decrease pain. The combined usage of these medicines will cause fluid or water retention which may cause swelling of body parts.

Herbal Preparations

There may be an interaction of Nosthyra with St John's Wort, which is used for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and various skin disorders. The combined usage of these medicines will reduce the effectiveness of Nosthyra.

Anticonvulsants

Nosthyra Tablet may interact with phenytoin, and carbamazepine which are used to treat seizures. The combined usage of these medicines will reduce the effectiveness of Nosthyra.

Antiviral Agents

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with ritonavir and nelfinavir, which are used to treat viral infections. The combined usage of these medicines will reduce the effectiveness of Nosthyra.

Anti-Infectives

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with rifampicin, rifabutin, or ampicillin, which are used to treat an infection such as tuberculosis. The combined usage of these medicines will reduce the effectiveness of Nosthyra.

Cytotoxic Drugs

Immunosuppressants

Aromatase Inhibitors

Pregnancy

This medicine should not be used by females who are pregnant. Use of Nosthyra may induce abnormal development of male sexual characteristics in the unborn female child and urinary opening on the underside of the penis in the unborn male child.

Vaginal Bleeding

This medicine should not be used by females with undiagnosed and abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Breast Cancer

This medicine should not be used by females with suspected, known, or a history of breast cancer.

Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism

This medicine should not be used in patients with active or a history of blood clots in the veins and arteries of the lungs.

Liver Disease

This medicine should not be used by patients with abnormal liver function.

Allergy

This medicine should not be used by patients with allergy to Nosthyra or any of its components.

Diagnostic Test for Pregnancy

Do not use this medicine as a diagnostic test for pregnancy.

Traveling With Medication

  • Ensure that you carry enough doses of each of your prescription medicines to last the entire trip. The best place to store your medicines is in the carry on baggage. However, while flying, if carrying liquid medicines, make sure you do not go over the limits imposed for carry-on liquids.
