Why it's used

Beafemic Capsule is used to relieve mild to moderate pain from a toothache, headache, muscle pain, injury, or pain after an operation or delivery. It is a prescription medicine. This medicine works by blocking the chemicals which generate pain signals in the body. This medicine helps by preventing the formation of pain causing signals in the body. Beafemic is also used to treat symptoms of painful menstrual bleeding. It is also used to treat abnormally heavy bleeding at menstruation. Beafemic is also used to relieve pain associated with swelling and stiffness of the joints caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Beafemic belongs to a class of medicines called Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also called as NSAIDs, help reduce fever, decrease pain, and prevent clotting of blood. NSAIDs also reduce inflammation in the body when used in higher doses.

How to use

Follow directions on the product label, information guide, and provided by your doctor before using Beafemic. Eat this medicine as per your doctor's instructions.
Beafemic Capsule is used to relieve pain. Pain medicines usually work the best if used at the first sign of pain and may not work well if delayed until the symptoms have worsened.
Beafemic is eaten with or after food.

Typical Dosage

The typical adult dose of Beafemic is 500 mg as an initial dose followed by 250 mg every 6 hours. The maximum dose for adults of Beafemic is 1500 mg per day. This medicine is commonly used for a period of 1 week for severe pain, and 2-3 days for pain during menstruation. There are no known habit-forming tendencies with this medicine.
This medicine should be used on an as-needed basis.
If using the liquid form of this medicine, measure the dose using the provided measuring cup, spoon, or dropper. Before pouring the medicine into the measuring device, you should check the measurement markings carefully. Then, pour the dose amount into the device. After use, clean and store the measuring device in a safe place for your next use. You should not use a tablespoon or teaspoon as the dose measuring devices since it can result in an incorrect dose. If indicated on the product package, shake the medicine before use.

Talk to Your Doctor

Tell your doctor if you develop new symptoms. If you have issues with the health of your liver, a low dose of Beafemic may be prescribed.
To see the impact of Beafemic Capsule on the body, your doctor may recommend a lower initial dose. Please follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Taking a high dose of this medicine is known to increase the chances of side-effects. A lower dose of Beafemic Capsule may be recommended to reduce the risk of side-effects. Older patients may see an increase in the risk of side-effects. Hence, a lower dose may be recommended.

Use in Children

The safety and effectiveness of using this medicine in children has not been established. This medicine may be used in children aged more than 14 years for relief from severe pain.

Avoid Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol with Beafemic.

Lab Tests

Before starting this medicine, your doctor may ask you to undergo certain medical or laboratory tests (Blood Pressure) to monitor for side-effects. After starting the medicine, your doctor should monitor you for these tests to make sure that you do not have side-effects of this medicine.

Storage

Store Beafemic Capsule at room temperature (20°-25°C/68-77°F) and away from heat, away from moisture, and away from light. Keep this medicine away from children and pets.
Medicines may be given for uses other than those listed in the medicine guide. Do not use Beafemic Capsule for symptoms for which it was not prescribed. Do not give Beafemic Capsule to others who may have similar symptoms as you. Self-medication can cause harm.

How to take Beafemic

Your dose may depend on several personal factors. You should consult with your doctor to find out the dose that is best for you. The dose of Beafemic depends on the following factors:

  • medicines recommended by your doctor
  • any other medicines in use

Beafemic Dosage

Dosage for acute pain

Adult (adults and children older than 14 years)
  • Recommended: 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed usually not to exceed one week
  • Initial: 500 mg
Children (children older than 14 years)
  • Recommended: 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed usually not to exceed one week
  • Initial: 500 mg

Dosage for abdominal pain during menstruation

Adult
  • Recommended: 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hours should not be necessary for more than 2 to 3 days
  • Initial: 500 mg

Dosage for heavy bleeding during menstruation

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose when you remember that you missed it. However, if it's time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and continue with your normal dosing schedule.

Overdose

What to do if you overdose on Beafemic?
The specific antidote of Beafemic overdose is not available. In the case of overdose, consider making the person vomit. An alternative is to consume activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is the form of carbon that has small, low-volume pores. These pores help trap chemicals as in the case of poisoning. Osmotic cathartic can also be used in patients within four hours of intake of drug or in patients with a large overdose. An osmotic cathartic is a laxative substance that eases the passing of stool.
Symptoms of an overdose of Beafemic
If you use too much of this medicine, it could lead to dangerous levels of the medicine in your body. In such cases, symptoms of an overdose may include:
  • lack of energy
  • nausea
  • pain in the upper belly
  • sleepiness
  • stomach and intestinal bleeding
  • vomiting

Precautions while using Beafemic

Before you use Beafemic, tell your doctor of your medical and health history including the following:
  • allergy to Beafemic
  • asthma
  • coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
  • high blood pressure
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • kidney problems
  • liver problems
  • previous use of NSAID medicines
  • severe heart failure
  • stomach ulcers
Before you use Beafemic Capsule, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or its ingredients. Your doctor may prescribe an alternative medicine and update your medical records to record this information. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to aspirin.
Before having any surgery when using Beafemic, tell your doctor and dentist about all the medicinal products you use including prescription and non-prescription medicines, and any herbal supplements.
The use of this medicine may change blood pressure. Use of this medicine can lead to an increase in the blood pressure level or worsening of high blood pressure levels if it was already an issue.
The use of Beafemic Capsule may change the functioning of kidneys. Use of this medicine may lead to damage to the patient's kidneys.

Alcohol

Avoid the consumption of alcohol with Beafemic Capsule. Drinking alcohol may cause stomach ulcers, and bleeding in the stomach and intestines.

Use in Pregnancy

Consult with your doctor on the use of Beafemic Capsule during pregnancy. This medicine increases the chances of developing a rare life-threatening heart disease, in the unborn baby. Beafemic Capsule belongs to the NSAID class of medicines. NSAIDs should not be taken after 29 weeks of pregnancy as these medicines may cause serious harm to the unborn baby.

Use while Breastfeeding

Beafemic is not safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor if you should either discontinue breastfeeding or stop using this medicine while breastfeeding. This medicine may pass in the breast milk and cause serious adverse effects in infants. You should consult with doctor and a decision should be made to either discontinue Beafemic or not to breastfeed while using this medicine.

Impact on Fertility

Beafemic Capsule may impact fertility in women. If you are trying to conceive, discuss with your doctor on the use of this medicine. This medicine is not recommended in women who are attempting to conceive. In women who are undergoing an investigation of infertility, withdrawal of Beafemic should be considered.

Dizziness

Beafemic Capsule can make you feel sleepy. Be careful while driving, using machinery, or doing any other activity that needs you to be alert. The consumption of alcohol with Beafemic Capsule can make you feel more sleepy.

Increased Risk

This medicine can cause stomach bleeding. The use of alcohol/tobacco with Beafemic may increase the risk. Talk to your doctor if you drink alcohol or smoke regularly.

Side-effects in Older Patients

Beafemic Capsule may increase side-effects in older patients. Elderly patients may see an increased risk of heart disease, decreased function of kidneys, stomach bleeding, and intestinal bleeding.

Long Term Use

This medicine in the longer term leads to an increase in the risk of kidney disease, heart attack, liver damage, and bleeding in the stomach & intestines.

  • Bleeding in the stomach and intestines
    Symptoms: upper abdominal pain, black tarry stool, vomiting of blood indigestion
  • Blood-related diseases (bleeding)
    Symptoms: blood loss anemia
    Monitor the patients for signs of bleeding.
  • Kidney damage (kidney injury and death of the kidney cells (renal papillary necrosis))
    Symptoms: nausea, fatigue, lack of energy, severe itching of the skin, diarrhea, jaundice, pain on touching the upper right side of the abdomen flu
    If this happens, stop using Beafemic and contact your doctor right away.
  • Heart failure and accumulation of fluid in the body (possibly fatal)
    Symptoms: shortness of breath, unexplained weight gain collection of fluid in parts of the body
    If this happens, stop using Beafemic and contact your doctor right away.
  • Liver damage (possibly fatal)
    Symptoms: fatigue, nausea, lack of energy, diarrhea, itching, jaundice, pain on touching upper right side of the abdomen flu
    If this happens, stop using Beafemic and contact your doctor right away.
  • Heart attack or stroke (possibly fatal)
    Symptoms: chest pain, slurring of speech, shortness of breath weakness
    If this happens, contact your doctor right away.
  • High blood pressure (worsening of existing high blood pressure)
    Monitor blood pressure regularly throughout the treatment.
  • Increase in potassium level in the body, which is also called as hyperkalemia
  • Asthma attacks in patients who have history of asthma
  • Serious skin disorders including swollen skin, erythema multiforme, Lyell's syndrome, swelling of the larynx, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and photosensitivity reactions

Warnings

Stomach Ulcer

Patients with a previous history of stomach ulcers are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestines. Use the lowest effective dose for a shorter duration in such patients.

Elderly Patients

Elderly patients are at increased risk while using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, and ruptured bowel. Use this medicine only when the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Severe Heart Disease

Patients with severe heart diseases are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients have an increased risk of severe heart diseases (blood clot formation, heart attack, stroke, and fluid retention in the body), which are possibly fatal. Use the lowest effective dose for a shorter duration in such patients.

High Blood Pressure

Patients who already have high blood pressure are at increased risk while using this medicine. These patients may have worsening of existing high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart related issues. Monitor your blood pressure level when you start taking this medicine and continue monitoring while you are using this medicine.

Anemia

Patients with long-term treatment of this medicine are at an increased risk of development of anemia. Proper monitoring of the hemoglobin levels in the blood is required for these patients.

Liver Disorders

Patients with liver disorders are at increased risk while using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of increase in levels of certain organic chemicals that can result in liver related issues, including liver injury or liver damage. Discontinue this medicine if you face any liver related issues.

Serious Skin Reactions

Patients with severe skin reactions are at increased risk while using this medicine. Such patients may develop an increased risk of severe allergic reactions. Discontinue the use of this medicine at the first appearance of a skin rash or any other sign of allergy.

Women in their Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Pregnant women are at increased risk while using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of a life-threatening problem (a rare heart disease) in the unborn baby. Avoid use of this medicine in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Previously have had Heart Surgery

The patients may have an increased incidence of heart attack and stroke while using this medicine. In such patients, NSAIDs should not be used.

History of Heart Attacks

There is an increased risk of having another heart-attack in such patients. The heart-attack may be fatal during the first week of using this medicine. Avoid the use of Beafemic in patients with a recent heart attack unless the benefits are more than the risk. If used, monitor the patients for signs of heart attack.

Heart Failure and Fluid Retention

Patients treated with NSAIDs such as Beafemic may experience the condition of fluid build up and water retention in body tissues. Use of this medicine may reduce the effect of other medicines used to treat heart diseases (e.g., diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers). Avoid the use of Beafemic in patients with severe heart failure unless the benefits are more than the risk of worsening of heart failure. If Beafemic is used in patients with severe heart failure, monitor patients for signs of worsening heart failure.

History of Aspirin-Related Asthma

Patients with history of aspirin-related asthma may suffer from an asthmatic attack because of intolerance to NSAIDs. This medicine should not be used in patients who are sensitive to aspirin. When Beafemic is used in asthma patients, monitor the patient for signs and symptoms of an asthma attack.

Kidney Damage

The long-term intake of NSAIDs may result in kidney failure or injury. If such an event happens, the NSAID therapy should be discontinued.

Increase in Potassium Levels in the Blood

An increase in potassium levels, including hyperkalemia, have been reported with use of NSAIDs. This may lead to certain illnesses called as, hyporeninemic-hypoaldosteronism state.

Lupus and Connective Tissue Disorders

Patients with lupus and connective tissue disorders are at an increased risk when using this medicine. There may be an increased risk of inflammation of brain and backbone membrane caused by an infection in patients with such disorders.

Interactions with Beafemic

When two or more medicines are taken together, it can change how the medicines work and increase the risk of side-effects. In medical terms, this is called as a Drug Interaction.

Antihypertensive Agents

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with antihypertensive drugs, used to treat high blood pressure. This medicine reduces the effect of these medicines. Monitor the patient's blood pressure and for any signs of worsening of functioning of kidneys during the use of Beafemic and antihypertensive drugs together.

Diuretics

Beafemic Capsule interacts with diuretics (like, furosemide), which are used to increase urine production in the body. The use of diuretics along with this medicine worsens the functionion of kidneys in patients.

NSAIDs

There may be an interaction of Beafemic with NSAIDs such as aspirin, which is commonly used to treat pain, inflammation and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Taking this medicine with aspirin increases the incidence of side-effects related to the stomach and intestines.

Antacids

Beafemic Capsule may interact with antacids containing magnesium hydroxide, which are used to reduce the level of acids in the stomach. Avoid the use of this medicine with antacids because of possible increased side-effects.

Anticoagulants

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with anticoagulants, that are blood thinners used to prevent blood clot formation. Use of Beafemic with anticoagulants increases the risk of severe bleeding. Vital parameters of patients who use Beafemic with an anticoagulant should be monitored.

Antineoplastic Agents

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with antineoplastic agents such as pemetrexed, which is used to treat cancer. Use of Beafemic with pemetrexed result in increased the risk of kidney disease, gastrointestinal complications, and a decrease in the activity of bone marrow. Healthy and active bone marrow is crticial for the proper functioning of the body.

Antimetabolites

Beafemic Capsule interacts with antimetabolites such as methotrexate, which is used in cancer therapy and as a medicine to supress the immune system. The simultaneous use of this medicine and methotrexate increases the risk of having a high level of methotrexate in the blood. The patient should be monitored for an increase in the levels of methotrexate in their body.

Immunosuppressants

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with immunosuppressants (cyclosporine and tacrolimus), which are used to prevent the organ rejection after a heart, kidney, or liver transplant. When Beafemic is used with cyclosporine and tacrolimus may increase the levels of cyclosporine in the kidneys and also lead to the risk of kidney damage in the patients using tacrolimus. Monitor the patients for signs of poor functioning of kidneys. Symptoms may include anemia, weakness, tiredness, and insomnia.

Antimanic Agents

There may be an interaction of Beafemic with antimanic agents (lithium), used to prevent and treat episodes of mania. This medicine increases the levels of lithium in the blood. Patient should be monitored for an increase in the levels of lithium in their body.

Cardiac Glycosides

Beafemic Capsule may interact with cardiac glycosides such as digoxin, which is used to treat heart failure. This medicine increases the levels of digoxin in the blood. Patients should be monitored for levels of digoxin in their blood.

Antidepressants

Beafemic Capsule may interact with antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), which are used to treat depression. Risk of bleeding in the stomach or intestines is increased when these medicines are taken together.

Antiplatelet Drugs

Beafemic Capsule interacts with anti-platelet drugs, which are used to decrease platelet aggregation and corticosteroids, which are used to provide relief from swelling and inflammation. Combined use of these medicines increases the risk of stomach bleeding, bleeding of intestines, and development of a wound or ulcer in the stomach or intestines.

Antibiotics

There may be an interaction of Beafemic with antibiotics such as aminoglycosides, which are used to treat bacterial infection. Combined use of these medicines increases the amount of aminoglycosides in the blood and leads to reduced functioning of kidneys.

Interactions of Beafemic by Severity

Severe

The following medicines are usually not to be taken together without consulting with your doctor or pharmacist.

Moderate

The following medicines may interact when taken together and can increase your risk of harmful effects. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking these medicines together.

When should Beafemic be not used?

Severe Allergic Reactions

This medicine should not be used by patients with a known allergy to it. Such patients may have an anaphylactic reaction or a severe skin reaction. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Asthma

This medicine should not be used by patients with a history of asthma and who are sensitive to aspirin. In such patients, severe inflammation of the nasal passage and sinuses may occur. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:
  • inflammation of the nasal passage and sinuses
  • growth on the lining of your nasal passage or sinuses (nasal polyps)
  • severe tightening of the muscles in the airways (bronchospasm)

Heart Surgery

This medicine should not be used by patients who have undergone heart surgery (coronary artery bypass graft surgery). Such patients have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Serious Skin Reactions

This medicine should not be used by patients who are likely to have serious skin reactions or show signs of having a skin reaction. This medicine can cause serious skin related side-effects such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which are possibly fatal. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:
  • skin rash with raised, red and itchy bumps

History of Allergic Reactions

This medicine should not be used by patients with a history of skin rash with raised, red and itchy bumps or other allergic-type reactions who are sensitive to aspirin. Such patients may have an anaphylactic reaction that can be possibly fatal.

Traveling With Medication

  • Ensure that you carry enough doses of each of your prescription medicines to last the entire trip. The best place to store your medicines is in the carry on baggage. However, while flying, if carrying liquid medicines, make sure you do not go over the limits imposed for carry-on liquids.
  • While traveling overseas, make sure that you can carry each of your prescription medicines legally to your destination country. One way to ensure this is by checking with your destination country's embassy or website.
  • Make sure that you carry each of your medicines in their original packaging, which should typically include your name and address, and the details of the prescribing doctor.
  • If your travel involves crossing time zones, and you are required to take your medicine as per a fixed schedule, make sure that you adjust for the change in time.

Expired Medication

Taking a single dose of expired Beafemic is unlikely to cause a side-effect. However, please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist, if you feel unwell or sick. An expired medicine may become ineffective in treating your prescribed conditions. To be on the safe side, it is important not to use an expired drug. You are much safer by always keeping a fresh supply of unexpired medicines.

Safe Disposal of Medication

  • If there are disposal instructions on the package, please follow the instructions.
  • If there are medicine take-back programs in your country, you should contact the respective authority to arrange for the disposal of the medicine. For example, in the USA, the Drug Enforcement Administration regularly hosts National Prescription Drug Take-Back events.
  • If there are no take-back programs, mix the medicine with dirt and place them in a sealed plastic bag. Throw the plastic bag in your household trash. Separately, remove all personal information including the prescription label from the medicine packaging and then dispose off the container.
